A stone-cement sentinel
sits on the site
of Pleasant Grove City’s
very first settlement

Here never had known
a matter be closed
adrift without orders
or proper enplacement

On stratified ages
the layers of sandstone
object to the sentiment
of the bronze-plaqued assessment

Stacked to withstand
where the beginning began
when a man sat on grass then
staked gates of impediment

With sweaty-armed efforts
he de-disturbed earth
erected the edifice
as his lasting testament

Supplanted of course
by this pebbled monument
making a grave
of what we agree
was previously settled
